Fiorini – Houben Quartet
The trumpet player Greg Houben is mostly known for his love of fragile, nuanced playing in the tradition of Chet Baker (his heritage can be heard on the album “How Deep is the Ocean”, the post-Bop of the quintet with Frenchman Pierrick Pedron and the hard-Bop of Maxime Blésin’s Bop and Soul sextet). Fabian Fiorini, meanwhile, has long been an in-demand pianist for contemporary jazz projects such as Octurn, Aka Moon, Fabrizio Cassol, Chris Joris and the quartet of Jeroen van Herzeele.
The encounter between the two musicians first happened outside music, in particular in what they call happy-culture, the meeting of two things that are essential in art: the constant search for pleasure or communicative joy and the need for new things.
By crossing their respective musical influences and surrounding themselves with the talented musicians Hans Van Oosterhout (drums) and Cédric Raymond (bass), they created the Fiorini-Houben Quartet – to carry on the tradition of great jazz quartets
